Speaker Bio
Prof. Di Benedetto is Full Professor of Surgery at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, where he has led, since 2013, the Unit of Oncologic Surgery, Hepatobiliopancreatic Surgery and Liver Transplantation. Since 2019, he has also held surgical responsibility for the kidney transplant program, and he serves as Director of the Residency Program in General Surgery at theUniversity of Modena and Reggio Emilia. In 2014, he launched a prolific robotic hepatobiliopancreatic program, achieving important milestones such as the first fully robotic ALPPS procedure for hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma. To date, the program has reached over 700 robotic procedures. In 2019, the program was further expanded to include kidney procurement for living donor transplantation and robotic kidney transplantation. In 2022, the first two cases of robotic hepatectomy for living donor liver transplantation were performed, followed in 2024 by the first fully robotic whole-liver transplants ever conducted in Italy.
In 2025, he performed the first fully robotic living donor liver transplantation (retrieval and implantation) in Europe. The Transplant Center of Modena, which has now performed 1,512 liver transplants, is distinguished by its management of technically complex cases, such as liver transplantation in patients with portal vein thrombosis and transplantation using donors after circulatory death (DCD), with the use of perfusion machines for organ regeneration (192 cases, among the largest European experiences). The center also pioneers innovative indications such as liver transplantation for metastases from colorectal adenocarcinoma and for cholangiocarcinoma. In 2023, he served as panel leader at the first consensus conference on the use of robotic technology in liver surgery (Paris, December 2024), and in 2024 again as panel leader at the first global consensus conference on the use of robotic technology in solid organ transplantation (Riyadh, December 2024). Professor Di Benedetto is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons since 2017, leads the Pancreas Study Group of ISLS, is involved in the ILTS Special Interest Group on "Advanced Techniques in Hepatobiliary Surgery". His current research interests include liver and kidney transplantation, particularly the application of new technologies in transplant surgery, such as robotic liver and kidney transplantation, living donor liver transplantation, use of perfusion machines, transplant oncology, and robotic surgery of the liver and pancreas.
