Dr. Roberto Hernandez-Alejandro, an internationally recognized leader in transplant and hepatobiliary surgery. Originally trained in medicine in Mexico, Dr. Hernandez-Alejandro completed surgical training and advanced fellowships in transplant surgery in Canada. Since becoming Chief of Solid Organ Transplantation at the University of Rochester in 2016, he has led one of the most dynamic transplant programs in the country—tripling its volume and consistently achieving outcomes that exceed national benchmarks, even in a region with some of the most complex cases.
He has established one of the largest living-donor liver transplant programs in New York and launched a groundbreaking protocol for liver transplants in patients with unresectable colorectal liver metastases, now the largest of its kind in the United States. Dr. Hernandez-Alejandro is also a dedicated mentor, having supported the development of trainees and faculty across North and Latin America, and is a prolific academic with over 200 peer-reviewed publications.
He holds leadership roles in numerous international transplant organizations and continues to advance the field through innovation, education, and collaboration.
