Michael L. Kendrick, M.D., is chair of the Department of Surgery at Mayo Clinic
in Rochester, Minnesota, and a consultant in the Division of Hepatobiliary and Pancreas Surgery. He is also Chair of Surgery for the Mayo Clinic Enterprise. Dr. Kendrick joined the staff of Mayo Clinic in 2003 and holds the academic rank of professor of surgery, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.
Dr. Kendrick earned his B.S. in molecular biology at the University of Utah and
his M.D. at George Washington University. He completed an internship and residency in general surgery at Mayo Clinic and served as chief resident. He also received fellowship training in minimally invasive surgery at Mount Sinai in New York and hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery at Mayo Clinic.
Dr. Kendrick’s research interests include benign and malignant diseases of the pancreas and liver, technical aspects of pancreatic surgery, and minimally invasive hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery. He is frequently invited to give presentations on his work both nationally and internationally and has authored numerous journal articles, book chapters and abstracts. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery and holds reviewer responsibilities for prominent scientific publications.
In addition to his clinical activities, Dr. Kendrick serves on multiple committees at Mayo Clinic, including the Mayo Clinic Clinical Practice Committee and the Rochester Surgical and Procedural Committee. He also provides mentorship to many research fellows and visiting clinicians, as well as other learners, and holds master’s faculty privileges in Clinical and Translational Science in Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. In recognition of his teaching skills, Dr. Kendrick has received the Teacher of the Year in Surgery Award for multiple years, conferred by Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education.
Dr. Kendrick is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an honorary member of the Brazilian Society of Surgical Oncology. His additional professional memberships include the American Surgical Association, Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, and the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract.
